Kits

If you are buying a drum kit, there are many options to choose from!
Drum kits range from loud, large and expensive to quiet and affordable electronic setups.

Acoustic Electronic
  • If you are looking to buy a starter kit, second hand drum kits are always being advertised locally.
  • Electronic kits are now becoming fast available and are normally supplied with headphones. They are more compact in design compared to acoustic kits and able to fit into smaller spaces. Also, the pads produce very little sound/noise when played (while wearing headphones). SEE HERE FOR PRICES
  • Silencer pads - If you have an acoustic kit and noise level is an issue, silencer pads are available individually or in sets. SEE HERE FOR PRICES
  • A typical drum kit comprises of 5 drums: bass drum, snare drum, 3 toms, hi-hat, crash & ride cymbals and stands and pedals. This setup is also refered to as a '5-piece kit' and is advised for learning the Trinity Guildhall books (listed below), as the pieces are written for this particular setup.

Sticks

There is a variety of drumstick sizes to choose from, the most common being 7A and 5A.
7A's commonly suit a young beginner (yr7) as they are a thinner and lighter stick, 5A's are thicker and will suit most players there after.
See below for a more detailed guide.

Tip_styles

Guide:
- The lower the number, the thicker the stick.
- Nylon tips produce a brighter tone.
- The letter refers to the design and tip of the stick (see below).

  • A - Fast and articulate / Soft-Medium volume
  • B - Durable / Medium-Loud volume
  • C - Robust / Loud volume

Note: Different sized drum sticks are designed for different sounds
and styles of playing (for adults). We advise 7A sticks for young

players as they are easier to manage when learning in the early
  stages.
However, many jazz and funk drummers use these thin and
  lighter sticks
permanently as the tone they produce from a drum kit
  better suits the
style they are playing.
